Championship win!

In Casablanca on a very fast road circuit the 1958 F1® season came to a climatic head. The final race of the season determined the World Constructors Champion and World Drivers Champion. Vanwall vs Ferrari. Moss vs Hawthorn.

As the race started, the team tactics were clear. Phil Hill’s job (Ferrari) was to harass Moss, whilst Tony Brooks (Vanwall) did the same to Hawthorn!

With 23 laps to go it couldn’t be more dramatic – Moss was well out in front; Phil Hill (Ferrari) was second but half a minute behind Moss; and Hawthorn was in third place. Then the Ferrari pit instructed Hill to drop back to allow Hawthorn into second place (to take the World Drivers Championship).

Moss, driving his masterful best, won and finished nearly 1.5mins ahead of the Ferraris of Hawthorn and Hill, and set fastest lap. And Vanwall won the first ever F1 Constructors Championship.

Hawthorn, having finished second, had done enough to become the first Englishman to become F1® Champion Driver of the World, beating Moss to the title by just one point. In fact, the top five Championship Drivers of 1958 were all British.

An incredible achievement for British drivers and teams, and one that set the foundations for Britain’s current major role in modern F1®.
