Two races to go and all was to play for. Mike Hawthorn in his Ferrari had a five-point lead over Moss in his Vanwall for the Drivers’ Championship. However, just like 1957, the front row of the grid on 7 September 1958 saw all three Vanwalls lined up, with a solitary Ferrari (Hawthorn) to keep them company. Poised behind in the second row lay the other three Ferraris.
Green vs Red; Britain vs Italy. Monza was to prove to be one of Tony Brooks’ great drives.
Hawthorn had taken the lead mid race but the steady power of Brooks’ very quick Vanwall meant that in Lap 60, Brooks passed Hawthorn right in front of the grandstands.
Brooks secured a great Vanwall victory at the home of the Italians. For the second year running.
The stage was set for an epic final duel in Casablanca.
